    The creative economy of the United States is a headline-making beast of mythic proportions. With nearly a trillion dollars, or 4.3% of the nation’s gross domestic product dedicated to arts and culture, it is no surprise to find a rush of individuals looking to capitalize on opportunities in the fine arts. However, like the lost cities of gold and the fabled fountain of youth, the creative economy of the US is more story than substance when it comes to individual rewards of riches and notoriety. 


    Fine artists, when taken with the whole of the Creative Economy, make up 10% of the total “artist workforce,” or about 210,000-250,000 artists among the 2.1 million art jobs available within the 5.2 million jobs available in arts and culture. Forty thousand (14.4%) of those artists are working as artists while maintaining a separate primary career. More than half of fine artists specifically (53%) are self employed.


    In Art Matters—Building Your Art Business, award-winning artist, teacher, and entrepreneur K. Ryan Henisey examines big data to explore where artists fit within the US economy, how artwork that actually sells is priced, what it means to be an artists in the contemporary US, and becoming an advocate for your art and art business. Art Matters is a four part series of short seminars intended for fine artists, sculptors, designers, photographers, and other arts professionals. 


    About K. Ryan Henisey

    K. Ryan Henisey is an award-winning artist and entrepreneur based in Los Angeles, California. Among other laurels, Henisey was awarded a Public Performance Grant from the city of West Hollywood (2021) and holds and Award of Excellence from the California State Fair (2015). Henisey is the founder of Pattern & Matrix, providing creative and marketing services for artists and arts organizations, founder and editor in chief of Queer Quarterly Magazine connecting LGBTQIA artists from around the globe, and is President and chief executive of TAG Gallery on LA's Museum Row where he oversees more than 50 annual fine art programs for groups and individuals. Henisey's curations at TAG include the 2021 California Open, 2021 Los Angeles Open, Pridepop, Queer Isolation, and more. His fine art has appeared with the City of West Hollywood, throughout private and public venues throughout California, with Muzillion Gallery in China, and at the Garroxta Museum in Spain. 

    SESSION TICKETS

    Led by award-winning fine artist, teacher, and arts entrepreneur K. Ryan Henisey, Art Matters sessions occur Saturdays and Sundays, September 25 & 26 and October 2 & 3, from 3-4:30pm (Pacific). This is a LIVE, IN PERSON series of events located at TAG Gallery. Each session is approximately one hour, followed by a 30 minute Q&A.
